Izumi Sano is originally from the manga series, Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (Hana-Kimi).
Hana-Kimi in a nutshell:
A Japanese girl, that was born in America, transfers to an all-boys school to attend the same high school as her favorite high jumper, Izumi Sano. And to attend Osaka High, she has to crossdress as a boy and keep her idenity a secret. When she arrives, she finds out that Izumi had given up high jumping due to an accident while in junior high. Afterawhile, she finds a way to convince him to high jump again and he got over his fear and continued high jumping.
Forcrossuniversity, I'm going along with the idea that the events in Hana-Kimi didn't unfold. He gave up high jumping and is still running away from his family. He brought Yujiro, a dog that he saved from the pound, with him to America.
